Dog de-shedding in Fairport is a bath and blow-out for double-coated dogs: huskies, golden retrievers, German shepherds, malamutes, Bernese mountain dogs and similar breeds. The groomer loosens and removes the dead undercoat so less of it ends up on your floors.
Why Not Just Shave It?
The American Kennel Club warns that shaving a double coat can make a dog susceptible to heat stroke and lead to improper hair growth and follicle damage. The undercoat is the insulation; the outer coat protects the skin. The one exception the AKC gives is a coat with so many tangles and so much build-up that the skin can't dry under it.
The ASPCA adds a winter rule for every dog: never shave down to the skin in cold weather.
How Often
When your dog starts dropping clumps of undercoat, that's the time to book. Brush at least weekly in between, and more while the fur is flying.
